ARIN IPv4 Transfer Volatility July 2021

As reported in the previous 2 blog posts, the month of May 2021 was a milestone in terms of ARIN IPv4 transfer requests.  It was the first time that transfer requests dropped below 100 per month since the market was born in 2015.  The volatility continues to have a decreasing trend line with a significantly lower average than the entire 2021 year, and the past 4 years combined.

Due to the volatility in IPv4 transfer market from April to May of 2021, our team was eagerly waiting to see the results of the ARIN transfers from June.  There could have been a few different predictions on where the IPv4 market would be headed based purely on the 8.3 transfers requests granted by ARIN, which are indicative of demand.

Pentagon & DOD Transfer 175 Million IPv4 Addresses

As of January 2021, the Pentagon assigned 175 Million IPv4 addresses to a new and “unknown” Florida based company named Global Resource Systems, LLC. According to ARIN, it is important to note that this is not a permanent transfer. Nevertheless, this came as a bit of a shock to the internet community.

So far 2021 has started with a hockey stick demand curve for IPv4 addresses. If you look at the numbers, the ARIN pre-approval requests have increased 10% over the previous quarter, and a whopping +30% over Q1 of 2020. In fact, Q1 of 2021 has indicated the largest requests for ARIN pre-approval of all time with a 584 in total.

With the end of a roller coaster of a year, 2020 had some interesting movement in the IPv4 sector as well.  Due to the increased demand for people to stat indoors, we saw a surge of requests to buy ip addresses shortly after the pandemic hit.

Throughout 2020 the IPv4 market has been very active in all the major internet registries including ARIN, RIPE and APNIC.

Unlike other industries that have suffered decreased demand for their services due to physical lockdowns and government mandated quarantines, hosting companies, ISP’s, cable providers and telcos have been trying to keep up with the increased demand for IPv4 address usage generated from more people being forced to stay indoors.
