About Inc. Regionails and the Inc. 5000
To apply for the Inc. Regionals, companies must meet eligibility requirements:
– Be privately held, for-profit, based in the U.S., and independent (not a subsidiary or division of another company)
– Have generated revenue by March 31, 2021
– Have generated at least $100,000 in revenue in 2021
– Have generated at least $1 million in revenue in 2023
– Have generated revenue in 2023 that exceeds revenue in 2021
Step 2: Revenue verification
All companies that apply to the Inc. Regionals must provide gross annual revenue for their base year (2021) and for the end year (2023). Those figures are then used to calculate the growth percentage that determines company rank. Inc. will verify the revenue figures using various forms of documentation, including redacted tax returns and financial statements, signed by the CEO and a credentialed third party.
Step 3: Growth percentage calculation
Companies on the Inc. Regionals are ranked according to the percentage growth of their annual revenue over a two-year period, from 2021 to 2023. That means that 2021 is used as the base year for growth. Here is the equation for growth percentage:
[(end yearly revenue – base year revenue) / base year revenue] x 100 = total revenue growth percentage
For example, if 2021 revenue was $3 million and 2023 revenue was $15 million:
– $15 million – $3 million = $12 million
– 12,000,000 / 3,000,000 = 4
– 4 x 100 = 400
– The growth rate is 400%.
Step 4: Vetting
Once a draft list is received by our editorial team, companies then undergo a second round of vetting, in which select founders are interviewed and editors in our research department conduct background research on applicants. All companies must meet standard editorial guidelines, which emphasize accuracy, fairness, transparency, and ethics. A company that does not meet such standards may be disqualified.
