Orangeburg Council approved spending $151,552 for the purchase of Internet Protocol addresses as part of the county’s broadband expansion efforts.

The county will purchase the addresses from the Brander Group.

The project consists of 20 blocks of IP addresses that total 4,096 new addresses, according to Harold Young, Orangeburg County Administrator.

Young explained the Brander Group is the only provider available, because it is the provider that was approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. USDA is funding the project.

“For us to get reimbursed, we have to use the vendor that USDA approved and that is who they approved,” Young said.

Young said all areas that are part of the countywide broadband expansion need new IP addresses.

IP addresses identify every device connected to the internet. This enables computers and other internet-connected devices to communicate over the internet and local-area networks.
